More School Counsellors Needed

MHCC has signed a letter to Premier Gladys Berejiklian calling for more counsellors in schools and for more teachers to be trained in mental health first aid. Twenty mental health organisations, teachers groups, parents and researchers signed the letter, which came in the wake of a cluster of nine suicides among young people in Sydney’s north shore earlier this year. The signatories, which include NSW Teachers Federation and Prof Pat McGorry, have called for one school counsellor for every 500 students and acknowledges that support in schools needs to be backed up by comprehensive mental health care in the community.
