Community Justice Centres

Department of Community Services
DoCs is the largest community services organisation in the southern hemisphere. They work with community partners and the community to help protect and care for children; coordinate welfare services to help people affected by disasters; fund community agencies to ensure services are provided: to prevent child abuse and neglect, to care for and support children, to support community development in disadvantaged communities, to support vulnerable individuals and families and the homeless, and for child care. They develop plans to ensure that vulnerable families and individuals have access to a range of community services; they provide emergency financial assistance to vulnerable families with children and to young people in care; they provide care and support for children who cannot live with their families; they provide and regulate adoption services; they regulate child care services; and they develop standards with other service providers for out-of-home accommodation for young people under 16 and monitor these standards.

Mental Health Advocacy Service
The MHAC provides legal representation to people in the following types of hearings: all patients appearing before magistrates in psychiatric hospitals; temporary patients appearing before the Mental Health Review Tribunal (MHRT) to have their order extended; temporary patients appearing before the MHRT to be made continued treatment patients; temporary and continued treatment patients appearing before the MHRT to have a Protective Estates Act order made; forensic patients appearing before the MHRT; and incapable persons appearing before the Guardianship Tribunal (subject to request).

Mental Health Review Tribunal
The MHRT is an independent body established by the NSW Mental Health Act 1990. It upholds the civil and legal rights of people with mental illness and works to ensure they receive the best possible care in the least restrictive environment. The Tribunal reviews case management plans proposed by psychiatric case managers and hospital staff. It does not prescribe drugs or treatments. The Tribunal conducts hearing and collects evidence from consumers, mental health workers and other interested people.

The NSW Anti-Discrimination Board
The Anti-Discrimination Board was set up in 1977 to administer the Anti-Discrimination Act (NSW). It investigates and conciliates complaints of discrimination, harassment and vilification. The Board is impartial in this process. It does not take sides. The Board tries to help both parties involved come to an agreement about how the problem can be resolved.
It informs and educates the people of NSW, employers and service providers about their rights and responsibilities under anti-discrimination law. It makes recommendations to the government about amendments to anti-discrimination law.

Anxiety Disorders Alliance inc. (ADA) Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Groups and Triumph Over Phobias (TOP) Self Help Groups (A standing Committee of the Mental Health Association NSW).
ADA is an organisation for people suffering from and affected by anxiety disorders and phobias. Support groups exist in several NSW regions. The support groups are held in a very relaxed atmosphere with sufferers and carers attending. The Self Help Group, TOP - is a structured self-exposure program. Groups meet weekly in a relaxed environment of advice and encouragement that enables people with OCD and phobias to learn to eventually react in a controlled way to their obsessions.

Baptist Community Services provide community support services and family services. Community support services enable people to remain in their home by providing services to the frail aged and those with physical, intellectual or psychiatric disabilities. Blue Mountains Community Resource Network
BMCRN is a peak organisation for Blue Mountains community organisations. Our actions are founded on social justice and community development principles. The Network has a generalist community development project, a migrant project and a disability issues project. The Network convenes the Blue Mountains Community Interagency and resources working parties on local issues such as mental health, affordable housing and access and equity. COMPEER Illawarra
Recruit screen train and match volunteers with professionally referred adults receiving mental health care. Volunteers give 4 hours a month for a minimum of one year if possible. Volunteers and their Compeer friend share time doing activities that they both enjoy and can afford, shopping, picnicking, movies etc. Compeer Illawarra has a group social recreational program. Volunteers choosing the social recreational group can volunteer for a few hours once a week or once a month for as long as they want. Male and female volunteers are wanted from all ages (18+).

Park and Village Service
Parks and Village Service is a specialist service dealing with residential parks (caravan parks and manufactured home estates). PAVS primary function is to provide resources and back-up on residential park issues to the Tenants Advice & Advocacy Services (TAAP) network.
