This course outlines the critical skills needed for effective Mental Health Work to provide care planning/review and promote social inclusion. This course as an ideal entry point for new workers will address:
• Engaging with and assessing the needs of clients and in particular the needs of people with mental health problems
• Goal setting and beginning to develop care plans
• Conducting risk assessment (ie ensuring both worker and client safety)
• Developing and implementing strategies to promote rehabilitation and recovery
• Reviewing work with clients including outcome measurements
• The use of prevention and promotion approaches in mental health.

The assessment consists of two reports and a portfolio. The first report is based on how you engage, assess, assist with goals, work with and manage risks with consumers and the second report will be based on the principles of working with people with mental health issues. The portfolio needs to show the range of things that you do in your work in providing support services to people with mental health problems.
