Smoking Cessation Flyer This one day course will cover the essential skills and knowledge that workers need to support consumers to address smoking within the context of community mental health. The training is suitable for any worker in community mental health and can serve as a good refresher course for people who have prior training.

  • The smoking culture in mental health – issues around smoking and mental health
  • Trends in Tobacco use
  • The impact of smoking and benefits of quitting
  • Intervention skills and knowledge – nicotine dependence, assessment and support options, brief intervention and motivational skills
  • Overcoming barriers to quitting and staying smoke free
  • Organisational and policy changes

Facilitator - Carla Cowles

Carla is a trainer and project coordinator with MHCC. In 2008-09 she coordinated the ‘Breathe Easy’ pilot project funded by the Cancer Council NSW which looked at addressing smoking within community mental health. The project had a number of successful outcomes including increased awareness of the issue and the development of a training course tailored for the sector.

Carla has coordinated the development of an Organisational Change and Training Package for the aim of assisting and guiding organisations through a change process to address smoking on a broad and long term scale.
