This course describes the context within which mental health work occurs. It is particularly suited to workers new to the sector and covers the following:
• An overview and framework to work within the sector.
• An understanding, underpinning values and philosophy of the sector and the service and service models that comprise the sector.
• The history of the sector and the service models that comprise the sector.
• Information on major illnesses and disorders to assist participants in understanding the different needs of consumers and carers.
• The information necessary to be inclusive of people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds when delivering services.
Assessment for this course includes the need to complete two assessment tasks. One task is to provide a report and the second task is to address a mental health sector specific case study. To be assessed as competent in this course requires a demonstrated understanding of the context of mental health work and the values and philosophy that underpin work in the sector.
