Supported decision-making can assist a person live a more independent, dignified and meaningful life. Decision-making is a skill that can be developed and practiced with support, which is particularly important in relation to the NDIS and emerging reform initiatives in NSW.
Supported decision-making (SDM) is an approach using values and principles designed to support people living with mental health and coexisting conditions to assist them exercise legal capacity and exert greater choice and control. Making day-to-day choices can build a person’s ability to make bigger decisions, while drawing on a support network.
The decisions we make are an expression of who we are – our uniqueness, our relationships with others, our achievements and hopes for the future. The process of making choices and acting on them is an important way for us to learn about ourselves, others and the world. SDM is an approach that can assist a person better achieve their aspirations and build their decision-making capabilities.
Who is this for?
Developed in recognition of the specific skills front-line workers need to effectively support people living with mental health conditions to make decisions, this course is relevant for mental health and support workers who work with a trauma-informed recovery-oriented approach. It assists workers understand the functional aspects of decision-making, as experienced by people living with mental health conditions. We encourage managers and team leaders to attend this course to enhance their understanding of practice issues and to support service outcomes.
